English Philology and Translation Department

The Department of English Philology and Translation offers Bachelor and Master degree programs in Philology, with the specialization ‘Germanic languages and literatures (including translation), first language – English’.

The Department sees its mission in educating highly professional philologists, translators, interpreters and teachers of English for educational institutions, various industries, businesses and public offices. The Department graduates are especially welcome at aviation companies and enterprises.

Department Head: Sergiy SYDORENKO, PhD, Associate Professor.

Faculty: 2 Full Professors (1 Doctor of Philology, 1 Doctor of Pedagogy), 17 PhDs, Associate Professors. Average age of the Department faculty: 38.

The Department carries out research in the following major areas: translation studies, with focus on specialist (aviation) translation; contrastive linguistics; hermeneutics; pedagogical aspects of training translators, for the aviation industry in particular. The Department is engaged in scholarly cooperation with universities and scholars in Ukraine and abroad.

Since 2008 the Department has been organizing and hosting the annual conference ‘General and Specialist Translation / Interpretation: Theory, Methods, Practice’, which serves a platform for specialists in translation, both theoreticians and practitioners, to exchange ideas and experiences relating to their daily professional work. Over these years more than 500 scholars, educators and practicing translators from 27 countries have invested their intellect and time to make this platform a valuable depository of expertise in the field.

Our students regularly win awards at the national and international professional competitions and contests. Among the most prestigious awards over recent years are 8 Diplomas of the 1st-3rd degrees of the National Competition of student research papers in Natural Sciences, Sciences and the Humanities, 3 Diplomas of the National Student Competition (Olympiad) in Translation (English), four grants of the National Student Grant Program ‘ZAVTRA.UA’.

Aviation Psychology Department

The Department of Aviation Psychology offers Bachelor and Master degree programs in Psychology, with the specializations ‘Psychology’ and “Psychology of Business”. The department carries out its educational and research activities, focusing on the needs of Ukrainian society in highly skilled psychologists.

Department Head: Liubov POMYTKINA, Doctor of Psychology, Professor.

Faculty: 2 Full Professors (Doctors of Psychology), 10 PhDs, Associate Professors. Average age of the Department faculty: 42.

The research activity of the department is carried out in the following directions: development of personality in psychological dimensions of communities and professions, human factor in aviation, extreme and crisis psychology, post-stress rehabilitation, age and family psychology, psychology of business.

The Department hosts the International conference ‘Aviation and Extreme Psychology in the Context of Technological Achievements’ and the all-Ukrainian conference ‘Identity in Psychological Dimensions of Communities and Professions’. These conferences are specialized forums for researchers in the field of psychology and pedagogy, university academics and practicing psychologists. The participants’ contributions are published in the Conference Proceedings.

In 2010 -2018, the students of the Department were awarded 4 Diplomas of the 1st-3rd degrees of the all-Ukrainian competition of students’ scientific works inNatural Sciences, Sciences and the Humanities, became prize-winners of the II Round of the all-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in ‘Psychology’. During 2012-2017, two students were awarded a scholarship in the National Student Grant Program ‘ZAVTRA.UA’, and five students were selected for the 3rd Round of the Program. The department students are regular prize-winners of international and national competitions of young researchers.

Professional Foreign Languages Department

The Department plays a significant role in training specialists in the field of aviation, airline economics, transport and information technologies. Major disciplines taught: Foreign Languages (English, German), Professionally Oriented Foreign Language, Foreign Language for Scientific Communication. The Department hosts refresher course of professional English for the lecturers of specialty departments of the University.

Department Head: Oleksandra AKMALDINOVA, PhD, Professor.

Faculty: 1 Professor, 6 PhDs, 6 Associate Professors. Average age of the Department faculty: 43.

Academic activity. Professional foreign language teaching is based on the textbooks written by the Department academics, regular prize-winners in university competitions of academic literature.

Research activity focused on the issues of philology and foreign language teaching technology is carried out in the following areas: studying the phenomena of terminology and lexicography; scientific and technical translation; methodological aspects of teaching foreign languages in non-linguistic universities; language trends of professional communication under globalization taking into account the cross-cultural communication aspects.

Since 2008 the Department has been holding annual sessions of ‘Linguistic and methodological aspects of teaching professional foreign languages’ section within the framework of the international scientific conference ‘Pressing problems of higher vocational education’, publishing the participants’ contributions in the Conference Proceedings.

Students of the Department annually participate in the scientific conference of young scientists and students ‘POLIT’, making presentations in English, and are regular prize-winners of the 2nd round of all-Ukrainian English language Olympiad.

Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics Department

The Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics provides teaching of the following disciplines: ‘Foreign Language’, ‘Foreign language for Specific Purposes’, ‘Business Foreign Language’, ‘Foreign Language (Special Language Military Training)’.

Educational process of the Department is oriented towards the formation of foreign language professional-communicative competence of future specialists in various fields.

Faculty: 1 Full Professor (Doctor of Philology), 10 PhDs, Associate Professors. Average age of the Department faculty: 40.

Department’s research is aimed at the investigation of literary and language dimensions of English-speaking countries national identity. The identity polyphony and its manifestation in linguistics, literature and art of English-speaking nations is explored. Since 2008 the Department has been holding the annual International conference ‘National Identity in Language and Culture’, which allows to share the results of investigations as a holistic theoretical and empirical model of multilevel operation of national cultural, literal and linguistic identity in the works of English-speaking writers and media texts, grounds the leading concepts of national identity as a unique philological code, as well as gnoseological, social and cultural and aesthetic factors which play significant roles within the processes of national perception and mythcreation. The participants’ contributions are published in the Conference Proceedings.

Student English-speaking discussion club’ was created with the purpose of developing and understanding cultural diversity, learning the ways of communicating with people from different backgrounds, to ensure the development of students’ language skills and contribute to overcoming the language barriers.

Foreign Philology Department

The Department of Foreign Philology provides foreign language training for specialists of educational degrees ‘Bachelor’ and ‘Master’ in the Humanities specialties (‘Information, Library and Archival Science’, ‘Philology’, ‘Psychology’, ‘Sociology’, ‘Law’, ‘Social Work’, ‘Management’, ‘Public Management and Administration’).

The department carries out its educational and scientific activities, guided by the Common European Framework of Reference for language education regarding the formation of plurilingual competence of future specialists.

Faculty: 2 Full Professors (Doctors of Pedagogics), 6 PhDs, Associate Professors. Average age of the Department faculty: 41.

The research activity of the department is carried out in the following areas: methods of teaching foreign languages for specific purposes; second foreign language teaching methods; linguo-didactic potential of the virtual learning environment in professionally oriented foreign language training of future specialists; problems of intercultural communication.

Since 2009, the Department holds the annual International Conference ‘Overcoming Linguistic and Communication Barriers: Education, Science, Culture’ – a specialized forum for scholars in the field of foreign language education and intercultural communication, teachers of higher education institutions. The participants’ contributions are published in the Conference Proceedings.

Targeting at international mobility and closer cooperation, the Department of Foreign Philology provides its students with the opportunity to learn five major foreign languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Latin), master additional foreign languages (elective course “Swedish language”) and practice foreign languages for special purposes (scientific group "Social work interaction"). This enables the students to represent the University at foreign language contests, participate in various international competitions and scientific events, take internships abroad, collaborate in educational and cultural cooperation projects with leading foreign centers in Ukraine (British Council, Goethe-Institute, etc.).

History and Documentation Department

The Department of History and Documentation offers Bachelor and Master Degree programs in the speciality ‘Information, Library and Archives Management’, with the specialization ‘Record management’.

The department carries out its educational and professional activities focusing on the needs of Ukrainian enterprises and organizations of state and private forms of ownership, including the aviation industry that require specialists in information-analytical activities, archiving and documentation.

Department Head: Iryna TIURMENKO, Doctor of History, Professor.

Faculty: 2 Full Professors(Doctors of History), 12 PhDs, Associate Professors. Average age of the Department faculty: 46.

The department’s research activity is carried out in the following areas: document science, archival studies, information support of archiving institutions, history of office management, personnel records management, administrative document management, document and information support of aviation industry, e-document management, museum studies and history of aviation.

The department academics are authors of scientific monographs, textbooks and manuals, methodological guides, articles in Ukrainian and foreign journals.

The department staff and graduate students actively participate in organizing and conducting scientific conferences in Ukraine and abroad. In particular, the department staff took part in the international project InterPARES Trust, in the framework of which two international conferences ‘Historical and Cultural Heritage: Preservation, Access, Use’ and a Ukrainian-Lithuanian scientific seminar ‘Digital Transformations and Institutions of Social Memory’ were held, and a monograph was published.

Students of the department take an active part in all-Ukrainian Olympiads on Records management and information activities and traditionally take prizes. In August 2016 students of the Department took part in the International Summer School of Youth Municipal Planning; in May 2017 – in the 19th session of EU Study Days.

Pedagogy and Psychology of Professional Education Department

The Department of Pedagogy and Psychology of Professional Education offers Bachelor and Master Degree programs in Psychology, with the specialization ‘Experimental Psychology’.

Department Head: Elvira LUZIK, Doctor of Pedagogics, Professor.

Faculty: 4 Full Professors (2 Doctors of Pedagogics, 2 Doctors of Psychology), 10 PhDs, Associate Professors. Average age of the Department faculty: 46.

Academic activity of the Department is carried out in the following major areas: innovative models of training would-be qualified specialists in technical universities; methodology of forming psychologists’ professional competences by means of psychological and pedagogical innovative methods; theoretical and methodological foundations of forming psychologists’ professional identity in aviation higher education institution.

The Department provides the functioning of a specialized Academic Council (speciality – ‘Theory and Methods of Professional Education’).

Since 2012 the Department has been holding an annual International conference ‘Pressing Problems of Higher Vocational Education’, a specialized forum for scientists in the field of Pedagogy and Psychology. Since 2014 the Department has been publishing ‘Proceedings of National Aviation University. Series: Pedagogy. Psychology’ indexed in several scientific databases.

Students of the Department annually become prize-winners of the 2-nd Round of all-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in ‘Pedagogy’ and ‘Psychology’. They regularly present their research papers at ‘ZAVTRA.UA’ contest sessions. Students take an active part at University cultural events, provide occupational guidance for prospective students and play a significant role in international youth communities ‘Young People for Peace’.

The Department of Sociology and Political Science offers Bachelor and Master Degree programs in Sociology (with the specializations ‘Sociology’ and ‘Sociological expert evaluation of social and political processes’) and Political Science.

The Department sees its mission in educating highly qualified specialists in the field of Sociology and Political Science for educational institutions, various industries, businesses and public offices.

Department Head: Olena KHOMERIKI, Doctor of Sociology, Professor.

Faculty: 5 Doctors of Sciences, among them 3 Full Professors, 8 PhDs, among them 5 Associate Professors. Average age of the Department faculty: 40.

Research activity of the Department is carried out in the following areas: sociological expert evaluation of social and political processes and sociology of transport. Since 2010, the Department has been hosting an annual all-Ukrainian conference ‘Current Problems of Modern Society in the Focus of Sociology’. The participants’ contributions are published in the Conference Proceedings.

The Department is the founder of the scientific journal “Sociosphere”.

The Department also carries out research on finding ways to integrate Ukraine into the European education space, identifying the essential features of modern education, analyzing ways to ensure its quality and accessibility.

Students of the Department take an active part in international conferences, are award-winners of the all-Ukrainian student Olympiads in Sociology and Political Science, the all-Ukrainian contest of students’ scientific works on Sociology and Political Science, the national Grant Program ‘ZAVTRA.UA’. In particular, in 2016, a student of the Department won the third place in the 2nd round of the all-Ukrainian contest of students’ papers on Political Science. Our students are regularly nominated for Scholarships of the President of Ukraine and of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

The Department carries out research in the following major areas: social politics, innovative methods and technologies in social work, work with the socially underprivileged social layers of population, psychological rehabilitation of people who suffered from crisis conditions, pedagogical aspects of training future social workers, for the aviation industry in particular. The Department is engaged in scholarly cooperation with universities and scholars in Ukraine and abroad.

Since 2015 the Department has been organizing and hosting the annual conference ‘Innovative methods and technologies of preparing specialists in social area’ which serves a platform for specialists in social area, both theoreticians and practitioners, to exchange ideas and experiences relating to their daily professional work.

During 2013-2018 our students regularly won awards at the national and international professional competitions and contests. Among the most prestigious awards over recent years are: Diploma ‘For the relevance of a social project’ in the National Student Competition (Olympiad) in specialty ‘Social work’, Grant from the British Council Ukraine for the organization of ‘Student school of social work’. Students have been organizing social actions and projects, working as volunteers. In 2017 our student was awarded the second Prize at the Regional stage of the National Competition program ‘The best student of Ukraine’.

Ukrainian Language and Culture Department

The Ukrainian Language and Culture Department conducts educational, research and methodological activities in order to facilitate implementation of the language legislation of Ukraine in terms of promoting the state language in educational environment and its popularization among students and staff.

Educational, methodological and scientific work of the department is an integral part of the university’s cultural-educational and patriotic activities.

The research activities of the lecturers are centered on the study of the Ukrainian language development as well as issues of culture and linguoculturology. The Department is working on the research projectScientific Communication in Modern Society: Linguistic and Cultural Aspects’.

Traditional International conference ‘Language and Culture in the Space of Innovative Technologies: Problems of Modern Communication’ is the modern space for formation and promotion of the Humanities discourse. Publication of its results is carried out in the journal “The Humanities Education in Technical Universities” indexed in several scientific databases.

Students. The Department arranges traditional scientific and educational events for students, including Petro Jacyk International Ukrainian Language Competition, all-Ukrainian student works competition in the Ukrainian Language and Literature (Teaching Methodology), Ukrainian Language Olympiad, Taras Shevchenko International Language and Literature Pupils and Students’ Competition, all-Ukrainian Radio Dictation of National Unity.

Philosophy Department

The Philosophy Department offers a Master degree program in Philosophy (specialization “Philosophy of Communication’) and teaches the following courses to students of other majors: ‘Philosophy’, ‘Logic’, ‘Religion Studies’, ‘Philosophy of Psychology’ (for Bachelor students); ‘Philosophical Problems of Scientific Knowledge’, ‘Philosophical and Ideological Foundations of Scientific Knowledge’ (for Master students); ‘Philosophy of Sciences and Innovations’ (for PhD students).

Philosophical disciplines contribute to the formation of a researcher and a competent specialist, equipping them with methodological culture.

The scientific activity of the department is carried out in the following areas: social philosophy and philosophy of history; dialectics and methodology of cognition; philosophical anthropology, philosophy of culture. Since 2004 the Department has been holding annual conferences of international and all-Ukrainian levels. The department carries out the state budget-funded research project ‘Information Society: its problems and prospects in the 21 century’, in the framework of which the annual all-Ukrainian ‘round-table’ is held.

Between 2007 and 2018, 3 doctoral and 25 candidate's theses were defended at the Department. Since 2004 the Department has been publishing the journal ‘Proceedings of the National Aviation University. Series: Philosophy. Culturology’, indexed in international scientometric databases: Index Copernicus, Google Scholar etc. Four lecturers published their research papers in journals indexed by Scopus and Web of Science.

The Department organizes research activity with University students preparing them for participation in the annual international conference for young scientists and students ‘Polit. Modern Problems of Science’ and in the annual Philosophy Week.

Physical Education and Sports Training Department

The Physical Education and Sports Training Department teaches Physical Education to all students of the National Aviation University.

The Department sees its mission in improving the overall fitness of the university students, raising their awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyle, advocating health and physical education, thus preparing young people for productive professional work in the future.

Department Head: Ivan VRZHESNEVSKY, PhD in Physical Education and Sports, Associate Professor.

Department faculty: 4 PhDs, Associate Professors, 1 Merited Master of Sports, 2 Masters of Sports of International Class, 8 Masters of Sports. Average age of the Department faculty: 45.

The Department carries out research in the field of physical education and sports, with focus on physical education of students in keeping with individual typological peculiarities of their nervous system.

Since 2005 the Department has been organizing and hosting the annual international conference ‘Physical Education in the Context of Modern Education’, which serves a specialized forum for teachers, trainers, coaches and researchers in the field. The contributions of the conference participants are published in the Conference Proceedings.

Sports activities: the Department is home to 22 sports groups/clubs in 12 kinds of sports and games. The Department staff organizes the annual athletic competitions ‘NAU Student Games’ and ‘Rector’s Cup’. Sport teams of the National Aviation University take part in international competitions, national and municipal championships in various sports and games.

In 2014-2018 our students, members of the University volley-ball, basket-ball, futsal, judo, track-and-field athletics and chess teams won a number of prizes in the national and regional competitions. Our step aerobics team has been many-time prize-winners of international contests, championships of Ukraine and the city of Kyiv.
